Status

The proposed development of Crown Land at the east end of Lac des Roches and on the west side of Birch Lake was officially "set aside" in November 2007. Friends of Lac des Roches and Birch Lake are 'cautiously optimistic' about this official status. A significant amount of time and money was invested into the development proposal by the Integrated Land Management Bureau (previously named Land and Water BC) which is a crown corporation of the Province. We suspect that the government will look at this development opportunity again with the hopes of obtaining some return on their investment of resources to date.

It is for this reason Friends of Lac des Roches and Birch Lake are developing an Optimum Land Use Proposal for incorporation into the Official Community Plans for this area, in both the Cariboo and Thompson-Nicola Regional Districts. We propose to designate the area at the east end of the lake into an Environmental Educational Reserve, ideally with official Provincial "park" status. This would protect a large portion of this pristine land from development, by anyone, in the future. More details about our Optimum Land Use Proposal can be found throughout the website and particularly under Our Activities > Other Activities.
